Psalm 34: 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all. 20 He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken. 21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

In this passage the psalmist offers several important points for us to reflect upon today:

1. The “righteous” (those in right relationship with God) experience many afflictions. We are not excluded, as God’s children, from the adversities of life.

2. When we do get stuck in adversity, adversity does not have the last word. The Lord “rescues” us so that we are eventually freed. This sometimes takes a while, but we are rescued. Even when death eventually takes us, which it will, we will be raised to new life through Jesus Christ.

3. Those who take refuge in our God will not be “condemned” (rejected, refused, sent away from God). We have been “redeemed” (paid for, restored, made new) by God’s grace.

This, my friends, is called “good news”.

Thank you God for good news this morning. Amen.
