1 Corinthians 2:11 For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
Paul is making a contrast between the wisdom of this world and the wisdom of God. Apart from the Spirit of God, we cannot understand the things of God. They are a mystery to us. They are confusing to us. The good news is that all believers receive the Spirit of God in our baptism. Hence, the capacity for understanding has been given to us.
That said, understanding the things of God does require some effort on our part. The more we study the scriptures, the better we understand them. The more we pray to the Lord, the more clearly we hear from the Lord. The more we follow the ways of God, the more we experience the blessings of God. And so on.
12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
Each of us has particular gifts (talents/capabilities) of the Spirit the Lord has given to us to be used for the his glory. Do you know what your spiritual gifts are? Could you write them down? If so, are you using these gifts on a consistent basis?
Lord Jesus, thank you for the gifts of your spirit given to all believers. Give us grace to develop our gifts and use them for your glory. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.
