Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
Here’s one thing that is certain – God’s ways are not like our ways. The older I get, the more I understand the truth of this verse. In my youth I thought real living meant I could do things MY way. I could do what I wanted, when I wanted, how I wanted. No limits baby!
However, it didn’t take long to figure out living without limits doesn’t lead to a better life, but to death. I joke with people sometimes that, had I not met my future wife as a young adult, I might have ended up dead in a ditch somewhere. That’s not really a joke.
A key part of growing up is embracing limits and boundaries.
Yet there is still a part of me that wants to rebel against these things. Deep inside there’s a small voice that says “You’re not the boss of me!” The rebellious child remains to a degree. Know what I mean?
Jesus, your lordship over us gives us abundant life – real life. Give us grace to submit to your rule, embracing the limits and boundaries of your Kingdom. For we ask this in your holy name. Amen.
