Matthew 11:28 (Jesus said) “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
These verses speak to me today. I’ve been on vacation for just over a week now, with six more days to go. It’s been awesome! It’s been a time to be less productive and focus more on simple rest. On “being” rather than “doing”. The fact that we’ve mostly stayed home as a family during this time has helped.
It’s pretty well documented that Americans don’t rest enough. I admit I fall into this trap as well. And I also admit there are times during vacation when I feel myself getting anxious because I’m not being “productive”. There’s a voice on the inside telling me I need to get stuff done. The passage today reminds me of an important truth:
The voice telling me I need to get stuff done is not the voice of the Lord.
Nope, this morning the voice of the Lord says, “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
Gracious Lord, in a world that affirms productivity, give us grace to rest in you. Amen.
