An Unstoppable Force…

2 Timothy 2: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.

We know that the apostle Paul, the writer of this letter, suffered many hardships for the sake of the gospel. He was harrassed, beaten, even put in prison (among other things). Those who were threatened by the message of the gospel did all they could to stop it. Nothing worked. True, Paul himself may have been taken out of action via imprisonment, but…

v.9 “the word of God is not chained”

As a pastor, it’s not surprising that I am heavily invested in the life of the church – but so are many of you who are not pastors. If you love the church like I do, you can’t help but notice some difficult changes happening in our midst.

Lots of churches are struggling to survive. Yes, there are some churches doing well, but the overwhelming majority of existing churches are not. And those that are doing well often struggle when a key charismatic leader retires or leaves. A church that continues to thrive through many generations of people and leadership is becoming something of a rare bird.

There has been much ink spilled on this topic in various media channels, so I don’t intend to do so here. However, it’s important to remember this key truth:

v.9 “the word of God is not chained”

I can’t say what the future holds for organized church as we know it, particularly in the Western world. I expect things will continue to be increasingly difficult for the foreseeable future. Truth? Many existing churches will probably not survive, which is unfortunate.

But make no mistake – the gospel is alive and well.

The institutional church has been a favored vehicle for communicating the gospel for hundreds of years, but the institutional church is NOT the same thing as the gospel itself. The good news of Jesus Christ cannot be chained. It is an unstoppable force! Remember this today dear Christian sister/brother.

Lord Jesus, today we pray for all those who struggle along with their struggling local churches. Change is afoot, which is not easy. Give us grace to remember that, whatever happens, the word of God is not chained. It lives even if we do not. Amen.
