Scripture: 2 Timothy 2: 22 Shun youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
Observation: Here the apostle Paul is giving guidance to his younger protege Timothy who is in the process of learning to lead. Like many younger people, I expect Timothy could get distracted – even if he was a leader in the church. I admit, in my younger years I often did not “pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace…”.
Application: In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen a number of young people I know and care about head off to college as freshmen, or return for a new academic year. Including two of my own children. There are so many distractions and ways for young people to get off track – as has been the case forever. If I’m honest, there are times when I marvel that I even survived young adulthood – as I’m sure some of you can understand. This verse today is prompting me to pray for our young adults who are just starting to find their way into adulthood.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, today we lift up to you all those young adults beginning to find their way in a world without mom and dad continually by their side. Give them wisdom beyond their years to avoid the many pitfalls awaiting them, and protect them from the evil one. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
