Psalm 140: 1 Deliver me, O Lord, from evildoers; protect me from those who are violent, 2 who plan evil things in their minds and stir up wars continually. 3 They make their tongue sharp as a snake’s, and under their lips is the venom of vipers.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the terrorist plots unfolding in recent weeks and months. The most most recent killings in Paris and San Bernardino are part of the current news cycle 24/7. And, as one might expect, frightened people want our government and military to do more to eradicate ISIS and other jihadists overseas, and protect us here at home. I, for one, wholeheartedly agree. We cannot continue with our same basic minimalist plans and expect markedly better outcomes. Our current plan isn’t working. A change of course is needed.
That said, I am not in favor of some of the more extreme measures being advocated. There are, and always have been, those who “plan evil things in their minds and stir up wars continually”. I am especially troubled by those who would play on peoples’ fears for their own political gain. (Yes I’m referring to Mr. Trump – and I am a lifelong republican). The scriptures warn us against such people. We would do well to heed this warning.
Lord, give us grace to use our heads while others are freaking out. We do not have to respond to fear by becoming extremists ourselves. Help us to do your will in your way. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
