Scripture: Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee (James and John) came to (Jesus) with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 But Jesus answered, “…this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” 24 When the ten (other disciples) heard of this, they were angry with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 26 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Observation: Here’s an excerpt from the College Press NIV Commentary, “Their petty disputes over positions of status and authority are reflective of secular values, not those of the kingdom. As the Jews were painfully aware, Gentile rulers and prominent pagan figures were driven by the quest for power, and exercised their authority and domination in the interest of self-promotion and personal preservation. In fact, all political systems are tainted to some degree by selfish concerns and personal ambitions. In the world of politics, humility and a refusal to advance oneself at the expense of others, are not considered virtues and a formula for political success. However, in the kingdom those who would be great must take the path of lowly service on behalf of others.”
Application: The commentary quote above spoke to me this morning as I reflect on the offensively crass and undignified nature of the current race for the White House.Today is Super Tuesday of the 2016 election cycle. Yes, I will be voting today along with millions of other people. Yet I cannot recall a time when I was less enthusiastic about any of the presidential candidates – Democrat or Republican. Something has gone horribly wrong if this is the best we can do in nominating candidates for POTUS – leader of the free world. Just my honest opinion. Whether you live in the US or not, please join me in praying for our country, that the Lord would somehow redeem this awful election cycle.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, in Luke 12:48 it is written “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.” Much has been given to the USA, no matter how one chooses to measure such things. Our country has outsized influence on the rest of the world. We are in desperate need of your grace, O God. Move your hand in this election cycle that a worthy candidate is ultimately elected to serve as POTUS. We ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
