Scripture: Exodus 32:12 Moses said to the Lord, “…Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14 The Lord said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And (Moses said to the Lord), “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.” 17 The Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
Observation: When the Israelites made the golden calf to worship while Moses was away, God was prepared to kill them all except Moses. Yet Moses pleaded for the lives of the people and God relented. In this passage, God was not intending to accompany the people on their way to the Promised Land, but changed his mind when Moses argued why God should go with the people, not just send his angels.
Application: What I find interesting about this passage is the fact that God was persuaded to change course by Moses. God had done a similar thing with Abraham who pleaded for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah – that God would spare them despite their wickedness. This leaves hope for you and me that God might also hear our prayers and be persuaded by our requests. This is a call to prayer, sisters and brothers. In Christ Jesus, we have been made children of God who have the ear of the Father Almighty.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, listen to your children praying and grant us favor as you did to Moses. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
