The measure you give…

Scripture: Mark 4:21 (Jesus) said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lamp stand? 22 For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”

Observation: As usual Jesus is teaching about the nature of the Kingdom of God. Jesus is saying the day will come when all people come to know the full truth of the Kingdom – and Jesus’ place in it as the Son of God. However at the time he was speaking he was mostly speaking in parables (stories that illustrate a lesson), which communicate meaning but do so in an oblique way. Not everyone who heard the parables understood them, v.23-24″Let anyone with ears to hear, listen!” Jesus also referenced the importance of sharing what one understands of the Kingdom with others, “… the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given to you.”

Application: As a pastor it’s my job to share with others what I believe the Lord reveals to me about the Kingdom, so I’m fairly practiced at it. That doesn’t mean it’s always easy, or that my insights are always spot-on. Far from it. But Jesus makes it clear we are ALL called to share with others what we know of God and God’s Kingdom. And the more we do so, the more insight we will receive. What opportunity is the Lord giving you to share something of God with someone else?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, most of us are shy or lack confidence when it comes to the things of God. We are afraid of saying something wrong, or being asked a question we can’t answer, or being rejected by others. This fear keeps us from sharing what we DO know with others. Give us grace to overcome our fears. Use us to bless others, and in so doing open ourselves to even greater revelation from you. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
