Luke 9:28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem…35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!”
This was an important event in helping the three disciples understand who Jesus was. They weren’t around when a similar voice spoke of Jesus at his baptism. And when did this revelation occur? During a time of retreat.
Retreat is important friends, but it can be hard to retreat – at least for me. I’ve been taking some time away, here and there, over the last few weeks and it’s a blessing. But I find it takes me a while to really relax, to give my mind a break. Know what I mean? I’ll bet you do. I’m trying to get better at this because I know my long-term health, and the health of my ministry, depends on me taking time away. I’m even committed to taking all my vacation time this year, which I haven’t always done in the past. It’s as Jesus said in John chapter 15, “Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.”
Lord Jesus, you were the very Son of God and you needed time of rest and retreat. Give us grace to do as you did, so that we might bear Kingdom fruit. Amen.
