Angry with God… again…

Scripture: Luke 12: (Jesus said) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Observation: Remember that the crowds who came to hear Jesus were often from the lowest rungs of society. They were desperate for a word of hope from the Lord. Jesus reminded them that God the Father remembers each and every one of them, both in this life and the next. It was true then and it’s true now.

Application: Dear friends, I’m troubled this morning. I’m troubled by news that an elderly Catholic priest in France had his throat slit by Islamist terrorists – while celebrating mass – yesterday morning. As a servant of the Lord and a priest, I’m sure God the Father will remember him in the life to come, but the Lord did not protect him yesterday. He was murdered in brutal fashion. That makes me sad and angry. There are abundant stories in the scriptures of God coming to the aid of his people, in ways large and small. I wonder why God didn’t come to the aid of his servant yesterday. One day, when I see God face to face, I’m going to ask. It breaks my heart.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I love you with all my heart, you know this. But this morning I’m sad and angry. At you. You defended your people many centuries ago, so why not now? Move your hand against the violence that’s breaking out all over the world, dear Lord. And heal my troubled heart. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. I am angry too.

    But…

I also am mindful that the priest died bearing the image of God in worship. He was a martyr/witness. He joined Jesus, Paul, and most of the Apostles on a very special journey from here to eternity by laying down his life, dying doing what he was born to do. And as awful as it is, no one can take that from the man! He was counted worthy to suffer for the name!
