Scripture: 1 Samuel 18: 12 Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence, and made him a commander of a thousand (instead of the entire army); and David marched out and came in, leading the army. 14 David had success in all his undertakings; for the Lord was with him. 15 When Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David; for it was he who marched out and came in leading them.
Observation: The favor of God was with David, which made Saul jealous, so Saul demoted David. To be made commander of a thousand instead of the entire army would have been a very public humiliation. But the soldiers themselves were having none of it. In the end, soldiers wants success on the battlefield so they might return home to their families alive. David was favored of God – everyone could see that. So David was made commander of the army despite Saul’s wishes. Saul’s actions could not prevent the will of God from taking place.
Application: When carrying out the will and purposes of God there is always opposition, which can take many forms. There are delays of various kinds. There are human opponents that get in the way. There is illness that takes hold out of nowhere. Needed resources fail to materialize. In-fighting among your own people flares up. Hidden sin gets exposed at an inopportune moment. The possibilities are endless.
The kingdom of this world, whose leader is Satan, will do its best to thwart the plans of God. Always has, always will.
Yet, if the bible teaches us anything, it’s that God’s purposes will prevail. The enemy’s tactics may delay, but will not destroy the plans of God. Some of you are experiencing the opposition of the enemy right now. The good work of God to which you’ve committed yourself appears in jeopardy. Problems have appeared seemingly from thin air. You’re beginning to have real doubt if your efforts will succeed. I get it dear brother/sister. I’ve been there many times. But fear not. The opposition is great, but the one who stand behind you is greater. God’s purposes will prevail! Let that truth sink into your spirit this morning.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we get discouraged when problems and obstacles pile up. We can even be tempted to quit altogether. Give us grace today to persevere in times of adversity, that we might not lose hope. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
