Scripture: John 14: (Jesus said) 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.”
Observation: Two key ideas here. First, to love Jesus is to keep his commandments. I don’t believe he’s referring to the ten commandments of Moses, but rather his own teachings. The problem is that people are inherently unable to consistently follow Jesus’ teachings in our own strength. Our sin will always lead us to rebel against God – which is why the second idea is important. In v.16 Jesus says he will ask God the Father to send the Holy Spirit into the world to help us be the people we were created to be. This happened on the day of Pentecost after Jesus ascended to the Father.
Application: This past weekend my father and my sister came to visit me in Dallas. It was great to catch up and spend some time with them, especially Dad since he lives in California. Don’t get to see him as often as I’d like.
When I was growing up we weren’t much of a church family. We weren’t bad people, just not particularly religious. That said, it’s been wonderful to see how the Lord has laid hold of us over the years. We’re far from perfect, but I can see the evidence of God’s grace in our lives. Life is much better when we pursue the ways of Jesus – knowing all along we will fall short of perfection.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you that you sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in the lives of believers. Give us grace to draw closer to you and the life you came to give us. Amen.
