Running from the Lord…

John 15: (Jesus said to his disciples) 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last…

In this verse, Jesus points out that he was the initiator in calling his disciples, not the other way around. So it is with you and me. This means I can’t take any credit for being a follower of Jesus. I’m not better than others. I’m not more righteous or wiser or anything else. Following Jesus is not the result of effort on my part, or a decision I made, but is the result of the Lord’s relentless pursuit of people. Even me. Even you. Faith is a gift of God’s grace – pure and simple. God’s goodness and mercy triumphs over human sin and death. We are living examples of this. Not perfect examples, mind you, but living examples.

Gracious God, today we give you thanks for your grace, your mercy, your faithfulness in pursuing us even when we were running away from you. To you be all glory and honor. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
