Interpreting the supernatural…

Scripture: Acts 2:29 (The apostle Peter said) “Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, ‘He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.’ 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you both see and hear.”

Observation: On the day the Lord sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples they began to praise God and speak in languages other than their own. This was done in public view in the city of Jerusalem so there were lots of witnesses – people from all over the ancient near East. They initially thought the disciples were drunk, but Peter corrected them. They were, in fact, witnessing God’s fulfillment of an ancient promise “in those days I will pour out my spirit upon all people…” (Joel 2:28).

Application: There have been many times in my life when I’ve needed others to help me understand what I was seeing or experiencing – as Peter was doing in our passage from Acts. This is particularly true with supernatural things. For instance I’ve occasionally had a sense of “knowing” about things before they happen. It used to freak me out until a seminary classmate of mine helped me see this as a gift of the Spirit. Another Christian helped me understand how I might hear the voice of God with something other than my ears. Yet another time I saw demonic spirits and was afraid. I called a dear Christian sister in the middle of the night so she could talk me down and interpret what I was seeing. She told me how to command the spirits to leave in Jesus’ name. And they did. I could name several more examples, but you get the idea.

More recently it’s been my pleasure to help others understand what they’ve seen and experienced in the supernatural realm. Particularly in the West, we’ve been taught our whole lives only to trust what we can explain through logic and reason. Blame the Enlightenment. But I can assure you the supernatural dimension of the world is alive and well – and active, whether you believe it or not.

What do you think? Is it possible you’ve been experiencing or witnessing supernatural phenomenon but not recognizing it as such? Happens all the time. However, the bible tells us we should not be ignorant of such things. If there’s something you’d like to share with me, I’d be glad to hear you out. Text me, message me, call me, whatever. No guarantees of course, but I’ll do what I can. It’s what Christians do.

Prayer: Lord, open our spiritual eyes to see and understand our world – both natural and supernatural. Amen.
