On this we all agree…

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters.

Observation: From the earliest days of the church divisions were present among believers. Heck, divisions were present among the original 12 disciples while Jesus was still alive! Paul writes “there (should) be no divisions among you”. Good luck. People disagree with one another. Always have, always will.

Application: I’ve served as a pastor for almost 20 years now and I can assure you I’ve never known a church without some level of disagreement or division. Christians will argue over just about anything! The key is not to expect 100% agreement, but rather to learn to live in peace with one another despite our disagreements. Paul’s words above may suggest otherwise, but I’m guessing this is what he meant as well.

Tomorrow is Easter Sunday, the most important date in the church year. Tomorrow we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. I’ll stand in the sanctuary with many people with whom I disagree on any number of things. And we will stand with Christians from all over the world with whom we disagree on any number of things. We will set aside our disagreements – giving thanks and praise to God for the great mystery of our faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Amen.
