Ephesians 3:16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, (God) may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
It wasn’t easy being a Christian at the time Paul wrote this letter. They had to deal with persecution from the outside and divisions from the inside. So Paul here offers a word of encouragement and a prayer that, despite their ongoing struggles, the believers might come to know “the breadth and length and height and depth” of the love of Christ.
In the last few days I’ve spoken with a number of people who are dealing with significant life challenges. Some of those challenges are from outside (work issues, relationship issues, financial issues) and some from within (doubt, loss, pain, anger). In many cases the challenges are both internal and external – at the same time. One (external) seems to trigger the other (internal).
While I can never know precisely what others are going through because I’m not them, I know what it’s like to get it from all sides at once. It sucks. It’s painful. One can begin to feel hopeless and alone. There is a weakening on the inside that is far more painful than whatever is happening on the outside.
Maybe that’s you this morning. Pressures from within and without have you down. Weakened. Losing hope. If so, this prayer is for you.
18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
