Isaiah 29:13 The Lord said: Because these people draw near with their mouths and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their worship of me is a human commandment learned by rote…
The phrase “their worship of me is a human commandment learned by rote” gets my attention. The suggestion is that the people are going through the motions. They do and say the right things, but they lack a genuine desire to draw closer to the Lord, to submit to the Lord, to be transformed by their worship of God.
This is me sometimes. Because I’m so familiar with worship it’s possible for me to participate without really thinking about what I’m saying and/or doing. It’s like worship on auto-pilot, which is not what our Lord desires from us.
Heavenly Father, when you chastise your people for worship that is “rote” I know I am guilty of this, at least some of the time. It’s not something intentional, it just happens. Help me to lean into worship as a means of intimacy with you and not a duty to be performed. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
