1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another.
In his gospel John writes about love. A lot. It was John who recorded, “For God so loved the world…”. He often referred to himself as “the one whom Jesus loved”. Here John reminds us of the essential sign of life in Christ. Love.
And not just any kind of love but the kind of love that is given to people when they aren’t particularly lovable. He uses Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as the core example of this kind of love.
I’ll admit – this kind of love doesn’t come easily for me. When I read “Whoever does not love abides in death” I feel convicted. So this morning I’m asking the Lord to take away my selfish heart, the one who tends to love those who love me; and replace it with a heart that loves as Jesus loved.
Lord let it be so. Change my heart and in so doing, bring me once again from death to life. Amen.
