Matthew 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
This is some pretty extreme stuff from Jesus. If I cut off every part of me that has led me to sin I’m pretty sure there’d be little of me left. My thoughts alone would require me to chop off my head. This is the dilemma of righteousness via keeping the laws of God. I’m not suggesting we ignore the ways of God, I’m just saying that our sinful nature will always get in the way.
It’s this reality that leaves us in need of a Savior.
Heavenly Father, we are sinful, broken people from the word go. We are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. Today we again lay ourselves before you. By your grace, forgive our many sins and make us new in Jesus Christ, in whose precious name we pray. Amen.
