Psalm 44:4 You are my King and my God; you command victories for Jacob. 5 Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down our assailants. 6 For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. 7 But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to confusion those who hate us. 8 In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.
There are certain themes that appear over and over in scripture. Today we have one such theme.
“For not in my bow do I trust… But you have saved us from our foes…”
The writer is not wanting to take credit for victory in battle as Israel triumphs over nations that are much larger and stronger than they are – at least on paper. The glory for victory belongs to God and to God alone. I suppose the repetition of this principle suggests that people will be tempted to take the credit.
This morning I’m reflecting on the blessings in my life. There are rough spots as well, for sure, but God has been very good to me. Heavenly Father, your blessings overflow. They are too numerous to count or completely recall. Fill my heart with gratitude this day. And never let me forget from whom all blessings flow. Amen.
