Psalm 71:4 Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel. 5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
6 Upon you I have leaned from my birth; it was you who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of you.
David recalls a life-long relationship with God, beginning before he left his mother’s womb. This is a comfort because David is, again, in trouble. “Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.”
There is something about the longevity of relationship that inspires confidence. David and God have been through a lot together. God has always proven faithful in David’s hour of need. There is no reason to believe this time will be any different – no matter what external circumstances suggest.
Long before I started to pursue God, God pursued me. I take comfort in that today, knowing that God will meet my spiritual wanderings with grace and mercy, welcoming me back into his arms of unmerited love. In a life in which few things can be counted on, this is a big one for me. Thank you heavenly Father for your undying love for your children. Teach me to be like David and look toward you in times of trouble. Amen.
