Job 12:1 Then Job answered: 2 “No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you. 3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you.
So Job has been listening to his friend/enemy/”frenemy” Zophar speak to him as if Job is an idiot. Remember Job has suffered great loss and is angry at God for what he believes is a miscarriage of justice. Zophar has been pushing back saying that Job must be guilty of something. Job has been insulted long enough by Zophar so he utters this bit of ancient smack talk.
“No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you.”
Job is suggesting that, in Zophar’s grandiose sense of self, human wisdom will cease when he dies. Haha awesome! It’s a bit of humor in an otherwise gloomy story. This morning I appreciate these words. It sounds like the sort of thing a group of friends might say to one another today when giving each other a hard time. I don’t know, I guess I’m just a bible nerd because I laughed out loud when I read it. Blessings on your day!
That’s great! I wonder if there is more humor in the Bible and we just don’t get it. I bet Jesus was funny. Sitting around the fire, cooking fish and cracking jokes with the disciples. 😉
