Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from your presence,
and do not take your holy spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and sustain in me a willing spirit.

This psalm is attributed to King David who openly admits he is unable to make his own heart clean. This is not a situation in which trying harder is going to help. He needs God to give him a “right spirit” because there is no other way.

This morning I too am aware of my inability to make myself right before God. My sin, my brokenness is too deep. Yet we have something available to us David did not – and that’s Jesus Christ. Jesus has paid the price for my sin and is ready to forgive my sins when I confess and repent. And so that is what I’m doing this morning.

Create in me a clean hear O God, and put a new and right spirit within me – for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
